چکیده

The antennas of EISCAT have been used for interplanetary scintillation (IPS) studies of the solar wind for many years. The main science found from these studies is obtained through the cross-correlation of signals from antennas having the longest baseline, providing more accurate information on the different solar wind streams which may be present in the line of sight. The development of dualfrequency IPS observations between the 1.4 GHz receivers at the remote sites and Tromsø, has allowed the use of the EISCAT Svalbard Radar for IPS, increasing the available baselines to the extent that three solar wind streams can sometimes be identified in the cross-correlation functions. A weak-scattering model incorporating three possible solar wind streams and dual observing frequencies is discussed and some results presented. A recent study found that the current sampling bandwidth limits the sensitivity of IPS observations at EISCAT. Methods of increasing the sensitivity, and the results of trials, are discussed.

Interplanetary scintillation observations of interaction regions in the solar wind

Co-rotating interaction regions (CIRs) between fast and slow streams of plasma are a prominent feature of the solar wind. Measurements of interplanetary scintillation (IPS) using the three widely separated antennas of the EISCAT facility have been used to detect the compression regions at the leading edges of interaction regions and to determine the location and velocity of the structure. Obser...

EISCAT measurements of the solar wind

EISCAT observations of interplanetary scintillation have been used to measure the velocity of the solar wind at distances between 15 and 130 Rx (solar radii) from the Sun. The results show that the solar wind consists of two distinct components, a fast stream with a velocity of &800 km s~1 and a slow stream at &400 km s~1. The fast stream appears to reach its final velocity much closer to the S...

Measurements of the direction of the solar wind using interplanetary scintillation

EISCAT observations of the interplanetary scintillation of a single source were made over an extended period of time, during which the orientation of the baselines between the two observing sites changed signi®cantly. Assuming that maximum correlation between the scintillations observed at the two sites occurs when the projected baseline is parallel to the direction of plasma ̄ow, this techniqu...

Identification of scintillation signatures on GPS signals originating from plasma structures detected with EISCAT incoherent scatter radar along the same line of sight

Ionospheric scintillation originates from the scattering of electromagnetic waves through spatial gradients in the plasma density distribution, drifting across a given propagation direction. Ionospheric scintillation represents a disruptive manifestation of adverse space weather conditions through degradation of the reliability and continuity of satellite telecommunication and navigation system...

Space Weather Studies Using Low-frequency Interplanetary Scintillation Observations

Plasma disturbances originating on the Sun, such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs), are a major factor in determining ‘space weather’ in the near-Earth environment. Virtually the only current source of routine observations of these disturbances as they propagate through the interplanetary medium are interplanetary scintillation (IPS) data. We review current work on time-dependent tomographic rec...
